Kutnu fabric, characterized by its vibrant tie-dye patterns and lustrous sheen, is a testament to the enduring art of Turkish weaving. Made from a blend of floss silk and cotton, this historic fabric is crafted through a meticulous process that involves traditional dying and weaving methods.
Originating from Gaziantep, a city renowned for its skilled artisans, kutnu is woven on hand-operated looms, a technique that has been preserved for centuries. The tie-dye effect is achieved through a resist-dyeing process, where parts of the fabric are protected before dyeing to create intricate patterns.
The fabric’s color is a rich purple hue, interspersed with white patterns. The tie-dye technique used in the fabric adds depth and an interesting interplay of colors, enhancing the fabric’s overall visual appeal with its vibrant and dynamic patterns. The purple color, often associated with royalty and luxury, complements the luxurious nature of the floss silk used in the kutnu fabric, making it a striking piece of textile art.
One yard of fabric measures 36” long, and multiple yards is cut as a continuous length.
Traditionally Kutnu fabric is made around 20”-25”wide for local market in Turkey due to it requires intensive labor to woven it.
